10K INSTRUCTIONS: Drive to and park at the Shady Grove Metro Station (see map). **DO NOT PLAN TO TAKE METRO TO THE START. METRO OPENS AT 7:00 AM. The 10K starts at 7:50 AM. You will not arrive in time to make the start.** Run the race, which will start promptly at 7:50 am, enjoy the brunch and festivities at White Flint, then take Metro back to Shady Grove from the White Flint station. We recommend runners purchase their Metro farecards at packet pickup. Transportation of warm-ups in your gym bag will be provided between start and finish. Spectators may purchase farecard(s) at packet pickup also.

About the Kids Runs

THE KIDS RUNS: 1K Run Around (around White Flint) and the 50-meter Toddler Trot begin and end in the White Flint parking lot close to the entrance to the Cheesecake Factory restaurant. Start time for both events is approximately 9:30. Parking access can be tight, so plan to arrive early for closest parking. Metro opens at 7:00 AM, so this may be a good choice for the Kids Runs – but not for the 10K, which starts at 7:50 AM. Allow time to stick around after the runs for children’s fun and games and lots of food.

More Information

This year all registered runners get a performance, moisture-wicking, comfortable to wear tank.
Each volunteer will receive a fleece vest.

Runners may purchase short sleeve or long sleeve wicking/quick drying shirts made of performance fabric engineered to keep you dry. Shirts are treated with a special FreshGuard application in the spinning process

PACKET PICK UP:

  • Saturday, April 24, 10a-4p at White Flint Mall
  • Sunday beginning at 6:45 near the race start on Somerville Road

THE 10K COURSE: is designed for speed. The start is on Redland Rd just east of the intersection with Sommerville Drive near the Shady Grove Metro Station. (see map) About 1/4 mile after the start runners make a left turn on to MD Rt. 355 (Rockville Pike). From there it's a straight shot down (190 ft. elevation drop, with some uphill sections) to the finish in front of White Flint Mall. Water will be available at the start, 2 stations on the course, and the finish. Split times will be called or displayed at each mile. The course is USATF Certified (MD07015JS).
See Course on Map My Run

SAFETY CONSIDERATIONS: 10K runners will have the full use of the northbound side of Rt. 355 until Gude Drive (approx. 1 mile). After that, competitors must run in the two median lanes. Traffic and safety considerations prohibit wheelchairs, strollers, baby joggers, skates, pets, and headsets. Participants unable to maintain a 14-minutes-per-mile pace will be directed onto the sidewalk and from that moment must follow normal pedestrian rules at the cross streets.

WAVE START: The Pike's Peek 10K will have a wave start to enable more runners to have an optimal running experience. By separating the expected 3000 runners into four pace groups and starting those groups on even minutes it is expected that more runners will be able to run "at their pace" right from the start. Check here for more details.

NASA FCU FAMILY FUN RUNS: Enjoy two shorter running events on the grounds of White Flint on Race Day: A 1K (0.62mi) "Family Fun Run" and a 50 meter "Toddler Trot." These will start after the 10K event, at approximately 9:30am. The entry fee for either event is $12 per person whether registering via brochure or on race day at White Flint. The entry fee entitles each participant to a premium (for those who register prior to race day), the running event, a finishers ribbon, and the brunch. There will be games and entertainment for children. Registration for parents who accompany their children is optional.

TIMING & SCORING: The race will be scored with the IpicoChip. You must pick up the chip at packet pick up and attach it to your shoe in order to be scored in the race and be eligible for awards. You must return the chip immediately after finishing or you will be charged $5 for replacement. Both "net" and "gun" times will be displayed.

10K RESULTS: Unofficial results will be posted at race site, as they become available. Official 10K results will be posted on this web site by 4pm on race day.

VOLUNTEERS: Not running? Want to help? Signup on-line or call 301-353-0200. No experience necessary. We'll train you, and you'll have fun!

POST RACE FESTIVAL: After your race, enjoy the fabulous Pike's Peek post race festival in the front parking lot of White Flint. Participants must display their runner's number to be served. Non-running family members may purchase a spectator's food badge at festival site for $5.00. In the event of inclement weather, the festival will take place in one of the covered garages.
